The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell.
Its not one for the faint hearted. But perfect for this time of year, with Halloween just gone and the dark nights, it makes for a very atmospheric read! My work colleague recommended it to me, she is the queen of horror and said it genuinely scared her, I must admit when I was reading it one night I jumped out of my skin…because my phone vibrated on the side during a particularly tense bit!
Although it didn’t get my heart racing, it was an uncomfortable read at some points, its the fear of the unknown, you know something is going to happen but what?! I put the fact that I wasn’t scared down to the way in which I read the book, in a very detached way, I am a huge wuss and I was scared of being scared!
Especially since the book is a ghost story, ghosts are my worst fear (and all thanks to the 3 I have seen in my life!) however Laura Purcell has a fantastic way of writing, I was engaged in the story from the first page. The Silent Companions is also a very well researched story based on the real Silent companions.
For those of you who haven’t the foggiest what I am talking about, a Silent companion or a dummy board is a life sized wooden board in the shape of a person. It is also painted portrait style to spook and surprise uninvited visitors, during the summer months they were placed by open fires and were very popular in England & Europe until the 19th Century. They were also pretty freaky. Maybe google it…
But I can say it is one of the first fiction books in months that I really have enjoyed!
Until next time,
